You'll get an understanding of important points to consider if you are trying to obtain patent protection and if you are trying to avoid infringing any third party rights.

This half-day course will guide attendees through the following questions:

  •     Have I done enough to patent yet?
  •     What does the patenting process entail?
  •     Will exploiting my invention infringe anyone else's patents?
  •     What's patentable in biological sciences?
  •     How do I engage efficiently with my patent attorney?

Isobel Finnie and Catherine Williamson, UK and European Patent Attorneys specialising in biotech, chemistry and life sciences will answer these questions.

What does the course cover?

This course aims to give you an overview of the patent system and provide practical tips to scoring successes and avoiding pitfalls. You'll get an understanding of important points to consider if you are trying to obtain patent protection and if you are trying to avoid infringing any third party rights. The basic principles of patent law, the process for obtaining patent protection and considerations on freedom-to-operate will be covered. 

Practical advice will address when to file a patent application and the information that should be obtained before filing a patent application. The seminar will also provide guidance on where to find information relating to patents and understanding and interpreting patent documents. Current challenges in securing patents in the biological sciences field will be reviewed. The seminar will be very practical in its approach, using real-life examples from the biological field to fully engage the audience.
