In the master's degree the basic knowledge acquired at the Bachelor level is extended in a research-oriented way and specialization is possible in a variety of biology related modules. Students expand their knowledge through a freely selectable range of minor subjects to improve career prospects according to personal interests and acquire the ability to present scientific facts.

A wide range of biological disciplines is represented in Kiel focusing on biotechnology, domestication research, developmental biology, evolutionary research, genetics, genetic engineering, geobotany, limnology, molecular biology, ecology, systematics and cell biology. There is collaboration with the following research institutes: Leibniz Institute of marine sciences (IFM-GEOMAR), Ecology Center Kiel (Özk), Max Planck Institute in Plön, Leibniz Institute for science education (IPN), research and Technology Center West Coast Research Center Borstel, Büsum (FTZ), the Federal Institute for nutrition and food. Specialisations are available in Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecology; Biodiversity and Evolution; Molecular Physiology and Developmental Biology, Genetics and Microbiology and Cell Biology.
