We aim to stimulate innovative developments at local and international level. We see it as our mission to foster knowledge transfer. The practical results and solutions provided by our applied research are made available to industry, public institutions and society as a whole.

We aim to act as an interface between society, industry and science. We offer practice-oriented education to provide the basis for innovative developments in the region.

We aim to promote cooperation in order to generate new synergies in the tertiary education sector.

We strive to promote intercultural competence by strengthening our regional and international focus in equal measure and aim to make an effective contribution to the European education and research landscape.

Our core competences

Our degree programmes cover a wide range of subjects and are embedded in a creative environment. This key strength results in an inspiring diversity, which is reflected in both our teaching and research activities. The main task of our university is to continuously develop and extend our range of educational programmes.

We offer high quality in teaching, research & development and continuing education and strive for scientific excellence.

Our research & development is geared to sustainability and the benefit of society as a whole.

Our internationalisation efforts are also designed to foster intercultural competence.

Our range of bachelor and master degree programmes is structured in line with the Bologna Process and includes many programmes on both a full-time and part-time basis as well as in the form of co-op education.

We place special emphasis on differentiated horizontal and vertical recognition of applicants’ existing qualifications to encourage wider access to our bachelor degree programmes from all educational fields and levels. Bachelor graduates of FH JOANNEUM and other universities can continue their studies by joining one of our master degree programmes. We strive to establish active cooperation with partner universities in Austria and abroad in the field of doctoral and master degree programmes.

Our teaching is aimed at direct implementation of knowledge in terms of learning outcome orientation and employability. This approach is supported in particular by our internship semesters and work placements.

We foster an academic learning culture focusing on a didactic concept incorporating team work, work in small groups, use of modern media as well as partnership and, above all, cooperation between students and lecturers who are able to combine theory and practice. Indeed it is this personal contact between students and teaching staff that characterises the special campus atmosphere at our university.

We promote the individual development of our students with a high staff/student ratio. Our educational philosophy fosters analytical skills and solution-oriented thinking and encourages a high degree of self-reflection and initiative. Our graduates are therefore well qualified to assume a range of management positions in industrial or business and social settings.

Our university is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure offering our students the best possible standards of education.

We are committed to meeting the demands of globalization and to developing our range of educational programmes with an international focus. The international exchange of students, lecturers and staff helps ensure we achieve these aims.

We consider international activities to be of major importance for the quality of university education. Mobility options in the form of studies, placements and excursions abroad are therefore integrated into all curricula with the aim of further promoting our international profile.

We cooperate with numerous partner universities around the world.

Research & Development

Our aim is to integrate innovative applied research & development in our teaching in order to maintain the quality of our degree programmes and provide practice-oriented education for our students.

Our applied research & development is geared both to the needs of industry and public administration. Applied research is at the interface between basic research on the one hand and innovative services and product development on the other. Our cooperation extends in both directions, thus providing a stimulus for innovation. We take an interdisciplinary research approach, combining scientific expertise with practical know-how.

Our staff and students work together with our clients to develop comprehensive solutions meeting international quality criteria and examine to what extent the results can be generalised or applied in other fields. Our research achievements are reflected in innovations, publications and patents.

Continuing Education

Our continuing education services are geared to the needs of students, graduates, staff and the general public.

We will continue to develop our further education and training services in dialogue with our partners from education, society and industry and with our shareholders. Our further education services thus actively contribute to strengthening Styria’s reputation as a centre of education and business as well as to maintaining the quality of life in our region.

The tailored educational services provided for our partners from business and society are complemented by targeted in-house training for our employees designed to enhance and develop their professional and personal skills and thus promoting FH JOANNEUM as an attractive employer in the region. Didactic training courses geared to the requirements of universities of applied sciences are held regularly in an effort to continually improve the quality of our teaching as the core competence of our university.

The most important aspect of our continuing education programmes is to give our graduates the opportunity to improve their career prospects in Austria and abroad. We also organise regular further education events to make our extensive knowledge available to the general public.

We recruit lecturers with excellent scientific expertise and didactic qualifications and carry out regular evaluations to maintain the high quality of our education and training services.

Our degree and continuing education programmes provide our students with career-oriented, scientifically sound expertise as well as important social skills.
